Boston's Best Damn Marketing Blog.

Haha, OMG I forgot how much I LOVE this commercial from Virgin Mobile.  Aka “Look, people who have Virgin Mobile are cool and party.  And they’re attractive and have cool accents.”  Joke.  I mean they actually said, “I mean these people look pretty satisfied”… hahahaha!  I really feel like they called Tim up from Accounting and said “Tim, you’re in charge of marketing now.”  I mean I really feel like this is the epitome of poor/cheesy marketing.  Hey look, these people are happy… they’re not payed actors or anything… look how much fun they’re having on their “awesome android phones”.  Ohhh, by the way the T-Mobile girl is ditzy and plays with a windmill.  Do you really want to have a phone carrier who is dumb and our less attractive version of the T-Mobile girl?  I mean think this over, she is probably the CEO of T-Mobile, and she can’t dance?!  Please, I think you should go with the safe choice here, I mean at least the Virgin Mobile people know a good club you can get roofied at.  Plus you don’t want the middle aged AT&T guy grinding up on you at the club.  So hike that skirt up, grab you’re cigarettes, and choose Virgin Mobile if you don’t want to be an L7 Weeeiiineeyy!  2 Very “hoping I’m not a square” Thumbs Down.

Does this ad really make you want to go to Art School?

This is just too good not to send to every teenager that you know. The College for Creative Studies launches an art school campaign that will make Detroit even more proud. Providence, Boston, NYC - your move.

pretty inartistic for an art school ad if you ask me. Pretty sad looking too… doesn’t exactly have me reaching for a paintbrush.  It really looks more like a D.A.R.E. ad, which was probably the intent but the message is lost for me.  I also feel that it is slightly targeted toward inner city kids or those in a less than fortunate school setting and that ART would be there way out.  Self expression and putting the endless boundless ends of your imagination on canvas that reach beyond a depressing poorly lit high school.  Even though I may have painted a rainbow bridge to an ivy covered art school in the back, I am not as qualified to say what would reach young adults in this situation.  But the question remains… Do people in sad unfortunate circumstances want to see ads of other sad people in the same seat as they are reminding them of how bad they have it OR would a group of smiling likenesses of themselves working on their next Rembrandt’s be more captivating or is it too far a stretch of the imagination that they could overcome their current situation and become the happy, smiling, likeness of their future selves?

Really I was looking for the new Sony Playstation 3 and Best Buy commercial that just recently aired and was going to talk about major businesses teaming up to promote their products together… but couldn’t find it.  So you get THIS!  Stumbled upon it by accident but you just have to admire some this eclectic group of characters under one roof.  And I’ll even say the WWII soldier had a stand out performance.  All n All, anytime there’s a room full of people cheering on “To Michael!” they got my vote.  Thanks Sony super heroes.

This is the latest from the World of Warcraft commercials with actress/comedian Aubrey Plaza.  I think this commercial says “Hey geeks, please don’t leave WOW, there ARE attractive, quirky girls playing, that would love to hang out in your mom’s basement with you and sit side by side as the two of you skip off into the digital sunset together to slay dragons and orcs together.  If you’re leaving WOW because a men’s health magazine tried selling you some garbage about girls liking guys who go to the gym or go out in the sunlight… DON’T LISTEN!  We’ve got girls lounging sexy on the couch in Daisy Dukes leveling up their ice sorceresses AND you don’t even need to leave you’re computer screen.  A smokin’ hott fire mage is sure enough to pop up somewhere and ask you on a date, so fret not Orc Master, stick with us.  We’ve got the girls and the fun.”

This ad was not talking to me exactly but as far as an ad for the nerds and Massive Mutiplayer Online Role Playing Games (MMORPG), I will give it two nail biting thumbs up.  Good luck mining for girls DungeonWizard2011!

McDonalds billboard ad… I’m lovin it!  (Too corny or just right?)

McDonalds billboard ad… I’m lovin it!  (Too corny or just right?)

So I found my new “GO-TO” site for billboard advertising inspiration.  TheHangline.com offers creative inspiration for small businesses by posting the some eye catching billboards created by the pro’s with the big bucks.  I had mostly written off billboard advertising until I saw the McDonalds’s sundial billboard but The Hangline gives many examples of some very creative billboard advertising.  If you are looking for some ad inspiration or some larger than life laughs, TheHangline.com is surely a place for marketers that think OUTSIDE of the box.

I thought this was perfect because it’s great marketing and gives me another aspect of marketing/advertising that isn’t print or commercial.  In my opinion, with the growing world of mobile apps, smart phone and ipad/tablet users, coming out with a fun gaming app that engages you and basically keeps you in front of a business ad the whole time is a great idea in my opinion.  It looks like a reasonable fun game, it gives you the option to order right from the app, and there is no doubt in my mind that the majority of the people who download and use the app aren’t ordering from Tony’s down the street after they’ve spent the past half hour creating the perfect pizza.  I knead this app and I need more creative marketing ideas!

Domino’s Lets You Make a Pizza On Your iPad and Then Order it in Real Life

Domino’s Pizza has found a novel way to engage iPad users and maybe sell a few more pizzas along the way. The pizza chain has created an app that lets you make a pizza onscreen and then order it in real life.

Domino’s Pizza Hero is a game/app that simulates the experience of kneading dough, spreading sauce, sprinkling cheese, placing toppings and cutting slices all while a timer ticks away. The object is to make the pizza as quickly as possible and to closely mimic the experience of real Domino’s workers. For instance, levels one through five of the game are called “Pizza School,” just like the real program at Domino’s. When you get to level six, your scores are based on reviews from in-game customers much like a fake version of the Domino’s Tracker, the company’s real-time feed of consumer comments.

I was doing a liquor sampling this past week and stumbled across this tag around the neck of a bottle of Smirnoff.  So it did the trick grabbing my attention but I really mostly laughed at it’s undeniable sexual nature.  I was really more convinced it was a neck tag for the Shake Weight if you know what I mean.  Not much to say about this one, but still questioning whether beautiful classy women shake their drinks up this close to their face.  I can hate all I want but the tag did in fact grab my attention and maybe the Geico gecko can’t sell a bottle of vodka as well as a sexy brunette in a cocktail dress.  I didn’t buy the bottle but I will give this pocket sized ad a very 007 thumbs up.  Shaken not stirred.

Marketing Takeaways: Boobs on glass.

If you haven’t seen this commercial yet, I feel like you might be missing out.  It’s an ad for Kayak.com starring a poor shlub who apparently made fun of the founder of Kayak.com years ago and now is apparently banned for life.  I still laugh at this commercial and more importantly it’s been in my head and I remember the name.  I haven’t been in the need for a travel site but if I were, this would be the one I would think of.  Besides the hilariousness of Frank Reardon’s immaturity and 80’s hair, I’m pretty sure that’s the funniest build up to a middle finger that they couldn’t show on TV.  The creator of Kayak as shown in the commercial looks like an ‘83 Steve Jobs or how I would imagine a young genius to look like… semi-stylish and yelling nerdy life long pledges at people with his underwear over his head.  I’m sure Bill Gates has someone who made fun of him in college still using Windows 95 and dial up internet somewhere in Alaska.  Makes you think twice before you pick out your next victim for a swirlee.
